Indian Potash to revive Odisha co-operative sugar mill with Rs 360 crore investment

Indian Potash Limited has signed an agreement with the Government of Odisha to revive the long-defunct Badamba cooperative sugar mill with an investment of about Rs 360 crore, aiming to boost sugarcane cultivation and rural employment in the region.

The project involves modernisation and expansion of the Badamba sugar mill in Cuttack district, which has remained shut for more than 15 years. Once operational, the facility is expected to restart production within a year and will have a crushing capacity of 3,500 tonnes of cane per day (TCD).

The revived mill will also include a 16-MW cogeneration power plant, a 10-tonne-per-day Bio-CNG unit and a modern cold storage facility as part of an integrated agro-industrial complex.

The agreement was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the company and the Odisha government in the presence of Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah. The project is expected to directly benefit nearly 10,000 farmers in the Badamba block by reviving sugarcane cultivation and creating employment opportunities in the region.

Under the agreement, the Odisha government will provide around 112 acres of land on a long-term lease for setting up the mill and related infrastructure. The project is also expected to stimulate rural economic activity and encourage farmers to take up sugarcane cultivation again.

Indian Potash has previously revived several sick sugar mills in Gujarat, and the Badamba project will follow a similar model combining technological modernisation and cooperative management to ensure long-term sustainability.

The company said the initiative is part of its broader effort to strengthen agricultural value chains and support farmer incomes. Sugarcane is increasingly being recognised as an energy crop due to its potential for producing ethanol, power and bio-fuels, making such integrated projects important for both the rural economy and India’s bioenergy ambitions.

The revival of the Badamba sugar mill is expected to play a significant role in boosting the cooperative sector while generating new livelihood opportunities in the region.
