Indian kharif acreage touches 1,086 lakh hectares

India’s total kharif crop area coverage stood at 1,086.31 lakh hectares as of September 4, 2026, with declines reported in the acreage of rice, Shri Anna and coarse cereals, oilseeds, sugarcane and cotton, while pulses and jute & mesta recorded an increase compared with the corresponding period last year.
Area under rice stood at 421.82 lakh hectares, compared with 438.19 lakh hectares during the corresponding period last year, marking a decline of 16.37 lakh hectares. The largest reductions were reported in Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. However, Assam and Odisha recorded higher rice coverage.
The area under pulses increased by 1.84 lakh hectares to 117.13 lakh hectares, compared with 115.30 lakh hectares a year earlier. Uttar Pradesh recorded the sharpest increase, followed by Jharkhand, Telangana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. These gains more than offset declines in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Odisha.
Coverage under Shri Anna and coarse cereals stood at 181.39 lakh hectares, down 1.09 lakh hectares from 182.48 lakh hectares during the corresponding period last year. Karnataka and Maharashtra recorded substantial declines, along with Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Higher coverage in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand partially offset the reduction.
Area under oilseeds declined by 1.07 lakh hectares to 191.99 lakh hectares, compared with 193.06 lakh hectares last year. Rajasthan and Gujarat reported the largest declines, while Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh recorded higher acreage.
Sugarcane coverage stood at 58.47 lakh hectares, down 0.40 lakh hectares from 58.87 lakh hectares during the corresponding period last year. Declines in Bihar and Uttarakhand outweighed gains reported in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
Meanwhile, area under jute and mesta increased marginally by 0.10 lakh hectares to 6.34 lakh hectares, compared with 6.24 lakh hectares last year. Higher coverage in Bihar and West Bengal more than offset declines in Assam and Andhra Pradesh.
Area under cotton stood at 109.17 lakh hectares, compared with 109.87 lakh hectares during the corresponding period last year, reflecting a decline of 0.69 lakh hectares. Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab reported lower coverage, while Telangana and Gujarat recorded an increase. Overall, the gains in Telangana and Gujarat were insufficient to offset the substantial decline in cotton acreage in Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab.
