India, Malaysia discuss expanding cooperation in agriculture

India and Malaysia have discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors through greater exchange of knowledge, expertise and best practices. The discussions took place between Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, and Mohamed Bin Sabu, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Malaysia, on the sidelines of the 9th ASEAN–India Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry (9th AIMMAF) in New Delhi.
The meeting was held during the two-day 9th AIMMAF, organised by the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) from September 8–9, 2026.
The ministers expressed interest in strengthening collaboration in joint agricultural research, technology and innovation through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which could provide an institutional framework for cooperation in mutually identified areas. They also discussed issues related to germplasm exchange, trade and market access, noting that greater cooperation could further strengthen the longstanding agricultural partnership between India and Malaysia.
India and Timor-Leste also discussed ways to strengthen institutional cooperation in agriculture and food security during a meeting between Chouhan and Marcos Da Cruz, Minister, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Forestry, Timor-Leste, held on September 9 on the sidelines of the 9th AIMMAF.
The Timor-Leste minister expressed interest in establishing a stronger institutional mechanism between the two countries to address agricultural challenges and enhance food security. Chouhan reiterated the Government of India’s commitment to sharing its best practices and supporting Timor-Leste in strengthening its agricultural research and innovation capabilities.
The two sides discussed the exchange of scientists and experts as well as human resource development. Timor-Leste also requested India to consider deputing a team of technical and scientific experts to assess ground-level challenges and provide recommendations in agriculture, forestry, livestock and aquaculture.
India and Myanmar reviewed opportunities to deepen cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors during a meeting between Chouhan and Min Naung, Union Minister, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, Myanmar, on September 9.
Chouhan highlighted the longstanding cultural and people-to-people ties between the two countries and described Myanmar as a close partner, noting the approximately 1,600-km shared border. He said the Memorandum of Understanding between India and Myanmar on cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors is at an advanced stage of finalisation.
The two sides also discussed the potential to expand agricultural trade. Areas identified for greater cooperation included pulses, cotton, dairy development and agricultural education. The Myanmar side also highlighted investment opportunities in the country, with the potential to strengthen economic and agricultural ties between the two nations.
The Indian delegations at the meetings included Dr M. L. Jat, Secretary, DARE and Director General, ICAR; Gyanendra Dev Tripathi, Additional Secretary, DARE and Secretary, ICAR; A. K. Sahu, Joint Secretary (IC), Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare; ICAR Deputy Directors General; and the International Relations Team led by Dr Naveen P. Singh, Additional Director General (International Relations), ICAR.
