On the occasion of World Fisheries Day 2025, the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, unveiled the crucial “National Framework on Traceability in Fisheries and Aquaculture 2025” to accelerate India's seafood exports and establish the nation as a global processing hub. The day’s theme was “India's Blue Transformation: Strengthening Value Addition in Seafood Exports.”

Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh addressed stakeholders, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts and the strategic use of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) to expand India's global market access. He described the new Traceability Framework as a transformative milestone that will bolster seafood exports by enabling real-time, end-to-end tracking of products from 'catch to consumer.' The framework will use digital tools like blockchain and IoT to enhance food safety, sustainability, and transparency across the value chain, ensuring better returns for fishers.

Ministers of State highlighted India’s rapid progress, noting that fish production has nearly doubled in the past decade, increasing from 96 lakh tonnes to 195 lakh tonnes, fueled by a historic investment of Rs 38,572 crores under schemes like PMMSY. Looking ahead, the government announced an ambitious target to scale seafood exports to Rs 1 lakh crores by 2030, with 30% comprising high-value, value-added products.

In addition to the traceability plan, the Department released five other key initiatives, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Mariculture and for the development of Smart and Integrated Fishing Harbours, alongside new Guidelines for Reservoir Fisheries Management. These interventions are set to modernize infrastructure, strengthen sustainability (such as adopting Turtle Excluder Devices), and accelerate value addition across the sector, aligning India with global ecological and quality standards. The event saw strong international participation, affirming global support for India’s Blue Economy aspirations.
