In a major step towards reducing import dependence and boosting domestic production, the Government of India has launched the centrally sponsored scheme, 'Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses,' with a substantial financial outlay of Rs 11,440 crore. The six-year mission, effective from 2025-26 to 2030-31, aims to achieve complete self-sufficiency (Aatmanirbharta) in pulses production.
The ambitious scheme targets a total pulses production of 350 lakh tonnes by the end of 2030-31. It will focus specifically on major pulse varieties like Tur, Urad, and Masoor. The announcement was made by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Ramnath Thakur, in a written reply in Rajya Sabha.
The mission outlines several strategies for achieving its goal:
• Production Enhancement: Promoting the production and availability of climate-resilient seeds to farmers. • Area and Land Productivity: Horizontal and vertical expansion of pulses into underutilized crop areas, encouraging sustainable crop rotations, and improving soil health. • Post-Harvest Management: Promoting effective post-harvest storage and management technology.
In a crucial measure to provide market assurance to farmers, the mission supports the guaranteed procurement of Tur, Urad, and Masoor for the next four years. This assured buying will be carried out by the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) and the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation (NCCF) under the existing Price Support Scheme (PSS) of the Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan (PM-AASHA).
Furthermore, the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare continues to implement the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Extension (SMAE) to empower farmers through training and technology dissemination via the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) at the district level. The government believes this multi-pronged approach will transform the pulses sector and solidify India's food security.
