Our Bureau, New Delhi
The 6th International Agronomy Congress (IAC–2025) was inaugurated recently at the NPL Auditorium, Pusa Campus, New Delhi, with the aim of charting a course for “smart, sustainable and profitable agriculture” as the foundation for a Viksit Bharat 2047, said Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare.

Organized by the Indian Society of Agronomy (ISA) in collaboration with Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) and Trust for Advancement of Agricultural Sciences (TAAS), the three-day conference (24–26 November 2025) has drawn over 1,000 delegates — scientists, policymakers, students, development partners and industry experts — from India and around the world.

International agricultural bodies including Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), CIMMYT, ICRISAT, IRRI, ICARDA and International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) are also participating, bringing global perspectives on agronomy.

Addressing the gathering, Chouhan emphasized that agronomy — the science of soil and crop management — acts as a vital bridge between scientific research and the farmer’s field. He called for policies that prioritise soil health, efficient water use, biodiversity, eco-nutrition, regenerative agriculture and digital agriculture. He announced that recommendations from the Congress will feed into national and regional agricultural action plans.

At the opening, the IAC–2025 Declaration was released, recommending: soil carbon sequestration and water-efficient farming; scaling up AI-based digital agriculture and the “Agri-Stack” framework; mainstreaming natural and regenerative farming models; targeted innovation for youth and women farmers; next-gen agronomy education; and climate-smart strategies aligned with One-Health, the LiFE Mission, and Net-Zero 2070 goals.

Over the course of the Congress, ten thematic symposia will delve into climate-resilient agriculture, precision input management, eco-nutrition, gender empowerment, livelihood diversification, mechanisation and post-harvest management, among others. The sessions aim to map pathways toward key sustainable-development goals related to poverty reduction, food security, environmental sustainability and biodiversity.

As noted by M.L. Jat, Secretary (DARE) & DG, ICAR, India’s agronomy research is already leading global efforts in climate-smart agriculture — and outcomes from IAC-2025 are expected to contribute significantly toward the long-term vision laid out in “ICAR Vision–2050.
