With the graded easing of the nationwide lockdown clamped to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, India’s food and beverage companies have embarked upon a spree to launch immunity-boosting products such as biscuits, snacks, juices, protein bars, khakra and quick munch offerings.

As per sources, the sales of immunity-boosting foods have shot up by an estimate of 20-40% in the last few weeks. Online searches for such products have gone up six-fold, with Ayurvedic home remedies, giloy, soya and vitamin C.

One of the fast-moving foods, cookies has been given a fresh immunity-boosting twist. While talking about this new product to FnB News, Sumit Singh, founder of Diosiv Foods Pvt. Ltd, Ghaziabad, said, “We have launched ‘Blueneck immune boost cookies’ with more than 20 herbal ingredients. It is an innovative product available in different flavours. We are the first company to develop herbal cookies and use this many ingredients in cookies. It will be available on Amazon and Flipkart from July 1. Currently, the product is available in stores of North and South Delhi. The range of the product differs from one another.”

Another innovative product is immunity-boosting powder. Hitesh Rathi, director of Advik Foods, Rajasthan, said, “We have camel milk powder and colostrum powder, which is an immunity booster. People are now aware of the products that will help them in boosting their immunity which will help them to fight against infections. Camel milk has higher iron & Vitamin C. It has lower fat content than cow’s milk. Colostrum powder fastens ligament and muscle healing. These products are available on Amazon and Flipkart. The sales have been affected because of the pandemic, but gradually we will be on track. We are also ensuring the safety of our workers in our factory. All the safety measures are also taken while delivering the products.”

Further, Soya Season has put to use the goodness of soya in developing a cookie product. Dinesh Shah, CEO, Soya Season, Karad, explained, “We have launched ‘Soya protein cookie’ which is on the developing stage in 2019. In India, we are the only company to manufacture soya protein cookies with 15 per cent protein content or 18 per cent protein content or so. If we look at sales of the food industry, losses are there in the first quarter. We sanitise the factory and safety measures are also taken. We are following all the guidelines by FSSAI.”

Focussing on the sales part, he said, “During this pandemic, the sales of immunity booster products are going good as many consumers are aware about the importance of protein. We are available offline. We have our major sales growth at Pune, Mumbai and Bangalore. Our products are even sold in many top hospitals in India as these biscuits are even fed to Covid-19 patients to improve their immune system. The range of our cookies is cost-efficient and it is available at cheaper rates.”

Meanwhile, experts from Punjab have developed completely dissolvable turmeric, which is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that will boost immunity against the deadly virus. The formulation was developed using nanotechnology and a unique combination of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)-compliant components, which has addressed all the three issues. The team has also filed a patent for the formulation.
