Nandita Vijay, Bengaluru
International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF)  bets big on plant-based concepts for food and beverage innovative solutions. Among the novel developments in this area are the high protein milkshake, active nutrition bar, plant-based patty which is a meat alternative - soy protein based and the mango mania beverage.

At the recently concluded Fi India, held in Bengaluru from September 21 to 23, the company displayed its products. "We have been focusing  on natural products and meat alternatives. The Covid-19 pandemic and the vegan  trend that has caught on, IFF decided to cater to the growing consumer demand," said a company spokesperson, while speaking to FnB News at the venue.

"The extensive research efforts that have gone into product development have  attracted  the customers from the food and beverage industry to take on the product development under  IFF direction," added the spokesperson.
In the area of beverages, the company is working on  a variety of flavours. These cover, coffee, tea, sports drinks, fortified beverages. In the PowderPure category it has naturally sourced, upcycled food powders for a more sustainable future. There is a significant level of upcycled material within each powder. Here it leverages  INFIDRI clean technology to preserve nutritional content, stabilise incoming streams and extend shelf life, according to the spokesperson.

With regard to citrus flavours, the spokesperson elaborated, “The citrus industry is facing a worldwide sustainability challenge—and IFF responds through the Re-Master Citrus Innovation program. Our global innovation program makes the flavour portfolio of natural citrus taste designs for all tonalities more sustainable by adding non-citrus derived alternatives, upcycled products, and circular design. Through our IFF Generessence approach, we identify unique molecules, assess their flavour potential, and mimic pathways to recreate authentic taste. With this proprietary technology, we replace natural oils with oil extenders to conserve precious natural resources, facilitate cost savings, and improve resistance to market volatility.”

In the case of pectin, the spokesperson said that this is a  bio-based ingredient and one of nature’s greatest solutions. To this end, IFF Pectin is a valuable component for the industry and the environment, making use of the resources right in front of us. When businesses choose IFF Pectin, the  versatile, natural ingredient that enhances texture and healthiness in the food products.

Soy protein comes from a well-known natural source: soybeans. "Our soybeans come from fields that are as close as possible to our facilities and that still meet our high standards. Our suppliers are committed to protecting the environment’s biodiversity, improving production practices, and guaranteeing healthy and ethical labour. Certified in the US,  we source soybeans exclusively from farmers who adhere to the U.S. Soybean Export Council’s Soy Sustainability Assurance Protocol (USSEC SSAP), which means they are committed to protecting biodiversity, Public and Labor Health & Welfare," said the spokesperson.

India too is an important market for the company where food  and processing industry has  increasingly focused on innovation, according to the company.
