Urban Chowk, in Ambili, Ahmedabad, has received the Clean Street Food Hub award through the ‘Ear Right India' movement, for providing safe, unadulterated, and hygienic street food.
Dr H G Koshia, Commissioner, FDCA, Gujarat, informed FnB News, “The reason we were able to get the Clean Street Food certificate at Urban Chowk and other places is due to the combined efforts of the Government and the FBOs. We’re targeting more food streets all over Gujarat so that even the common man has accessibility to clean, safe and hygienic food.”
“We sensitise the FBOs about the benefits of the Eat Right movement and they are always ready to co-operate with us, as they too understand the need for clean eating. I have also personally visited many food streets in the State and eaten the food from there,” added Koshia.
Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) along with support from the State Government bodies has framed a benchmark for upgrading the existing infrastructures of food streets across the country - ' Eat Right India'.
Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA), Gujarat, has been implementing various rules and regulations under the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2011. Above all, the main aim of this movement is compliance of food safety and hygiene standards, promotion and availability of healthy diet, food handling at preparation, food waste management, promotion of local and seasonal food and creating awareness on food safety and healthy diet.
“Kankaria food street was awarded with the first Clean Street Food hub in the country, since then other cities have stepped up to receive this certification,” said Koshia.
The Gujarat State Government is committed to providing clean, unadulterated, and hygienic food to the public, which is reflected in its 11 recognised Clean Street Food Hubs, paving the way for other States to follow. At present, FSSAI has declared 21 food streets across the country as Clean Street Food Hubs.
