Groundnut sowing area up but no cut in prices as crop & oil to be exported
Thursday, 18 September, 2025, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
The All India Edible Oil Traders' Federation has said that the groundnut sowing area has increased for the current season and the production is expected to increase in the state of Gujarat from last years' 50.85 lakh metric tons to 66 lakh metric tons.

However, the rise in production would impact the prices of groundnut oil is a farfetched idea currently as a large part of the groundnut crop and oil is expected to be exported for the current season as well.

Shankar Thakkar, president of the federation, said that due to higher MSP of groundnut the local traders find it difficult to stock groundnut for oil production.

"Higher MSP would result in higher prices of oil production from groundnut and higher market price which is unfeasible in current market conditions. As a result, the groundnut gets exported particularly to China and Gulf countries. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that the prices of groundnut oil will reduce despite higher production," said Thakkar.

In Gujarat, the arrival of a fresh crop of groundnut is being reported from Saurashtra. Similar reports are coming from Rajkot and other areas including Gondal wherein arrival of 16000 bags (35 kg per bag) was reported. Similarly,  22000 bags arrived in Saurashtra and 3500 bags in Rajkot last week.

The arrival of the crop in major mandis of Gujarat is expected to continue in coming weeks while the groundnut oil is expected to remain around Rs 1330 to 1325 per 10 kg.
