The Government of Maharashtra has banned the sale of tobacco products at shops that sell chocolates, chips and other edible items. It stated that it undertook the step to ensure that children are not addicted to tobacco products.
Commenting on the ban, Pallavi Darade, commissioner, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Maharashtra, said, “Children are easily exposed to, and tend to get influenced, to buy and consume tobacco and other products, which are easily available at small pan shops with chocolates and chips.”
It is pertinent to mention here that the health ministry, Government of India, had directed the state governments to impose a ban on the sale of tobacco at outlets which also sell fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) products. Following this, FDA Maharashtra took this step.
The order added that establishments or shops caught selling both tobacco and FMCG items would face legal action, including cancellation of their licenses, imprisonment for a term upto six months and a fine.
Darade added, “With the ban on tobacco, we have also extended the ban on scented supari across the state by another six months (i e till July 2018). These products are being sold in large numbers, and the ingredients used in these scented supari are harmful to human health.”
