Government has expanded the Digital General Crop Estimation Survey (DGCES) to 23 States and Union Territories as part of efforts to improve the accuracy, transparency and timeliness of crop yield estimation across the country.
DGCES was initially launched as a pilot during the Kharif 2023–24 season in selected districts across 10 States. Following the successful pilot, the programme was expanded to 22 States/UTs during the Rabi 2023–24 season. It is currently being implemented across 23 States/UTs.
The digital system is designed to strengthen the conduct of Crop Cutting Experiments (CCEs) through a fully digital and paperless workflow. It enables real-time data capture through a mobile application and incorporates geo-tagging, time-stamping and authenticated photographic evidence to improve transparency and accountability.
DGCES also standardises data collection and validation procedures across States, helping improve the accuracy, reliability, consistency and timeliness of crop yield estimates. Web-based dashboards enable online monitoring and supervision, facilitating faster processing and compilation of crop yield data.
The expansion of DGCES is being undertaken progressively in consultation with State Governments, taking into account their preparedness, availability of digital infrastructure and the capacity-building requirements of field functionaries. Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Ramnath Thakur provided this information in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
