The Government of India is accelerating support for women-led fisheries cooperatives under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) by approving financial assistance to boost deep-sea fishing capabilities and livelihood opportunities, the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying announced.
In a significant step, the Sri Sengazhaneeramman Fisherwomen Cooperative Society in Puducherry has been approved for a Rs 72 lakh subsidy under PMMSY to procure a deep-sea fishing vessel and essential accessories. In addition to the subsidy, the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) has sanctioned an Rs 88 lakh term loan to enable project implementation.
This financial support is expected to substantially strengthen the cooperative’s operational capacity by providing access to a modern deep-sea vessel, enabling its members to access deeper fishing grounds, adopt safer and more efficient fishing practices, and significantly enhance incomes. It is also aimed at broadening collective economic resilience and technological capabilities under PMMSY’s framework.
The initiative reflects the Government’s commitment to empowering fisheries cooperatives under the vision of “Sahkarita Se Samriddhi,” reinforcing cooperatives as pivotal drivers of inclusive and sustainable growth within the blue economy.
This development aligns with the ongoing national effort to expand deep-sea fishing capacity. On October 27, 2025, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah inaugurated a fleet of deep-sea fishing vessels at Mazgaon Dock, Mumbai, under PMMSY, reiterating the Government’s focus on strengthening India’s coastal and maritime economy.
Beyond vessel support, the Department of Fisheries has introduced structured mechanisms to boost cooperative participation in the development and management of Smart and Integrated Fishing Harbours, including transparent leasing and governance frameworks.
Complementing these institutional reforms, a Joint Task Force with the Ministry of Cooperation is working to enhance institutional capacity, infrastructure access, and opportunities for fisher communities nationwide, further advancing the Government’s goal of a prosperous and inclusive blue economy.
