Government accelerates advanced breeding, feeding & dairy support measures to enhance milk productivity
Saturday, 06 December, 2025, 15 : 00 PM [IST]
The department of animal Husbandry and dairying has rolled out a comprehensive set of measures to boost milk productivity across the country especially in drought-prone and climate-vulnerable regions under its expanded livestock and dairy development programmes.

Key among the initiatives is the nationwide expansion of the artificial insemination programme under Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM). Free-of-cost artificial insemination services using semen from high-genetic-merit bulls will now be made available directly at farmers’ doorsteps, particularly in districts where coverage remains below 50%.

In a bid to accelerate genetic improvement of bovines, the government is also promoting the use of advanced techniques such as bovine in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Dairy farmers adopting IVF will be eligible for cash incentives of ? 5,000 per assured pregnancy. Meanwhile, sex-sorted semen will be offered enabling the production of female calves with over 90% accuracy with the cost partially subsidized (up to 50% on assured pregnancy).

To streamline the selection of high-genetic-merit animals, the department has developed indigenous genomic tools: “Gau Chip” for native cattle and “Mahish Chip” for buffaloes. Through a dedicated portal, farmers can avail genomic testing to identify and breed superior bovines.

Beyond breeding, the government is investing in dairy infrastructure under the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD). This includes establishing quality-milk testing labs, primary chilling units, and strengthening marketing chains particularly for cooperatives, self-help groups, and farmer-producer organizations.

Livestock entrepreneurs will also benefit from schemes offering 50% capital subsidy (up to ? 50 lakh) for setting up poultry, sheep, goat, pig, horse, camel, and other livestock or fodder-processing units. The Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF) will aid infrastructure expansion, offering 3% interest subvention for processing and diversification facilities.
Further, DAHD’s newly launched digital service app — “1962 Farmers App” (in collaboration with National Dairy Development Board) — will help farmers with ration balancing and scientific feeding recommendations using locally available resources.

With these measures, the Government aims to enhance the productivity, profitability and climate resilience of India’s dairy sector promising better yields for farmers and greater supply stability for consumers.
