GoM on GST yet to submit report despite industry plea to cut rates
Wednesday, 09 April, 2025, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
Even after 3.5 years of its creation, the Group of Ministers (GoM) on Rate Rationalisation set up by the GST Council, is yet to submit its final report.

The GoM was created to review the current tax slab rates and recommend changes in the same as may be needed to garner required resources; and review the current rate slab structure of GST, including special rates, and recommend rationalisation measures, including merger of tax rate slabs, required for a simpler rate structure, in GST in September 2021.

However, it is learnt that the GoM on Rate Rationalisation has not submitted its final report, as yet.

The reason for delay in submission of the final report is not known while the Government has accepted that it was in receipt of requests from trade associations such as Tamil Nadu Food Grains Merchants Association seeking reduction in GST rates on several essential foods.

Meanwhile, according to the Ministry of Finance, the Government has been sensitive to the challenges faced by the trade and industry, especially small and medium taxpayers and is open to the suggestions for further betterment of the GST regime.

“Based on the suggestions received from the various stakeholders including Indian industry associations, the Government, on the recommendations of GST Council, has proactively taken several measures from time to time to reduce the compliance burden of taxpayers, simplify the tax regime and to promote ease of doing business,” said a statement issued by the Union Ministry of Finance.
