The Western Region Office of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed all food business operators (FBOs) to immediately stop using newspapers to pack, wrap, or serve food items.
Citing serious health risks, the apex food regulator issued an advisory instructing street vendors, restaurants, cloud kitchens, caterers, and other food businesses to switch exclusively to approved, food-grade packaging materials.
The directive was triggered by widely circulated reports of food being served and packaged in newspapers in Mumbai. Following the incident, a joint enforcement drive was launched by the local municipal authority and the state food safety department.
In its warning, the FSSAI highlighted that printing inks contain a complex mixture of harmful chemicals, dyes, and heavy metals. When hot or greasy food comes into contact with the print, these toxins leach into the meal, posing severe long-term health risks to consumers.
Furthermore, the regulator pointed out that newspapers are routinely transported and stored in unhygienic conditions, making them potential carriers of disease-causing pathogens that can trigger foodborne illnesses.
The FSSAI also reminded businesses that using newspapers or similar printed materials for storing, wrapping, or draining oil from food is strictly prohibited under the packaging regulations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
