FSSAI plans to review e-commerce business norms
Tuesday, 03 November, 2026, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
The FSSAI is considering a review of the regulations related to e-commerce business, citing serious lapses on the part of such platforms in labelling and display of key information related to food products.

In recent times, the FSSAI has increased vigilance over product listings on such platforms, and several e-commerce platforms were issued notices for violation of key regulations related to claims, labelling, etc.

It is learnt that the FSSAI had held a consultation meeting with stakeholders in this regard, where a review was proposed in the regulations for e-commerce platforms for strictly enforcing labelling norms such as manufacturing date, expiry date and batch numbers, so that consumers are informed about the product before they order.

It is pertinent to mention that several such platforms were under the scanner recently, particularly dark stores of quick commerce platforms, wherein food safety violations have been reported.

Meanwhile, All India Consumer Products’ Distributors Federation –AICPDF while commenting on the development said that the news is very encouraging and is a welcome development.

Dhairyashil Patil, national president of AICPDF said, “The growing concerns regarding the non-display of manufacturing dates, expiry dates and batch numbers on e-commerce and quick-commerce platforms have rightly drawn the attention of FSSAI.

Consumers have the right to know exactly what they are purchasing, just as they would in a traditional retail store. Such information is essential for food safety, informed decision-making and consumer confidence.”

AICPDF has repeatedly emphasised these concerns and has approached the Union Government several times recently.

However, experts suggested that the proposed regulations must go beyond displaying information.

“Platforms must also be held accountable for ensuring that products are safe, properly labelled and delivered within the prescribed shelf-life requirements.”

We hope this initiative will lead to effective implementation and a level playing field for traditional retailers, who have always operated under food safety and regulatory requirements.

Ultimately, consumer safety must remain paramount, irrespective of whether a product is purchased from a neighbourhood kirana store or through a quick-commerce platform,” Patil concluded.
