FSSAI notifies changes in fat quantity in double toned milk

The FSSAI has notified the changes in fat quantity in double toned milk under the sub-regulation 2.1.2 relating to ‘Standard for Milk’  with the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) First Amendment Regulations, 2023.

Now for double toned milk, Minimum Milk Fat (per cent, m/m). is fixed at 1.3 against the previous number of 1.5 while the requirement of  Minimum Milk Solids- not-Fat (SNF) (per cent, m/m) remains the same at 9.0.

Also, under the standards for fermented milk products applied on fermented milks, including, heat-treated fermented milks, concentrated fermented milks and composite milk products based on these products, the food authority has amended that the name “Fermented Milk? may be replaced with designations dahi, and yoghurt if the product complies with the relevant provisions of standard specified for these products.

“Provided further that in case of fermented products complying with the relevant provisions of dahi, any other designation (prevalent regional common name) may be used together with the term ‘dahi’ in brackets on the label,” reads the amended notification.

These amendments shall come into force on August 1, 2023, the notification added.
