The notice also put out the physical description of the additives, their chemical composition, characteristic properties and standards for the usage.

The list includes MSG or Monosodium Glutamate, the once controversial additive because of which the product Maggi noodles faced ban last year and its manufacturer Nestle lost revenues running in crores. It is pertinent to mention here that recently the apex food regulator has also issued clarification on its usage.

Monosodium L-glutamate has been described as white, practically odourless crystals or crystalline powder. It may have either a slightly sweet or a slightly salty taste.

According to the said notice, in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standard and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, in regulation relating to “standards of additives,” the apex food regulator has proposed to add Beta-apo-8’-carotenal, Ethylester of Beta-apo-8'-carotenoic acid, and Titanium dioxide as additive.

Further, the FSSAI has decided to add preservatives namely Sodium benzoate, Benzoic acid, Potassium nitrate, Sorbic acid, Potassium nitrite, Sodium propionate, and Sulphur dioxide.

It has listed acidity regulators including Ammonium hydrogen carbonate, Sodium citrate, Fumaric acid, Tartaric acid, Dicalcium phosphate, Phosphoric Acid, Citric Acid, Malic acid, and Sodium hydroxide.

It has released a list of Gelling agents/Thickeners/Stabilisers that includes Pectin, Sodium alginate, Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose, Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose enzyme hydrolysed, Agar, Gum Arabic, Tragacanth gum, Gum Ghatti, Calcium Alginate, Alginic acid, Guar Gum, Gum Karaya, Polyglycerol esters of fatty acids, Polyglycerol Esters of Interesterified Ricinoleic Acid, Glycerol Esters of Wood Rosin, and Carrageenan.

It has listed antioxidants including Butylated hydroxyanisole, Dodecyl gallate, Propyl gallate, Octyl gallate, Ascorbyl palmitate, and Sodium ascorbate. The apex regulator has added Mineral Oil /Medium viscosity and Mineral Oil (High viscosity) as glazing agents, Propylene glycol as Humectant/Wetting Agent/ Dispersing Agent and Sorbitol as Sweetener/Humectant/Sequestrant in the list.

Stakeholders can give suggestions within 60 days of the listing, said a notice uploaded on FSSAI website.
