FSSAI issues draft elaborating on claims made by certain edible oils

The food regulator has issued a draft of regulations on claims made by certain edible oils and sought responses from the stakeholders.
The draft called Food Safety and Standards (Advertising & Claims) Amendment Regulations, 2021, intends to elaborate on claims made by food businesses with respect to virgin coconut oil, chia oil, avocado oil, sunflower seed oil-high oleic acid, and safflower seed oil-high oleic acid.
The draft proposed to include claims in Schedule IIA that contain List of Claims for Edible Vegetable Oils.
For Virgin Coconut Oil, the FBOs can use ‘contains medium chain fatty acids that are easily metabolized’, while for Chia Oil, the claim is , Rich in Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid (Omega-3 PUFA, Alpha linolenic acid) and Alpha linolenic acid is an essential fatty acid that contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels.
For Avocado Oil , FBOs can use, Rich in MonoUnsaturated Fatty Acid (MUFA) that helps to maintain normal blood cholesterol levels while for Sunflower seed Oil-High Oleic Acid, FBOs can use, Rich in MonoUnsaturated Fatty Acid (MUFA) that helps to maintain normal blood cholesterol levels and Contains Tocopherols which are natural antioxidant.
And for Safflower Seed Oil-High Oleic Acid, the claim included in regulations is, Rich in MonoUnsaturated Fatty Acid (MUFA) that helps to maintain normal blood cholesterol levels.
According to the regulations, the claim statements provided may be used on labels or advertisements, as the case may be while the terms used such as Rich, Contains shall be in accordance with conditions specified in Schedules-I of the Advertisement and Claims Regulations of 2018, provided that Food Business Operators may choose to use same or similar terms in the claim statements as provided in this Schedule while ensuring no change in the intent and meaning of the claim.
