After the Ministry of Ayush, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a directive strictly prohibiting the use of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) leaves in food products, health supplements.
The directive clarified that only the roots of the plant and their extracts are permitted for human consumption, citing significant safety concerns regarding other parts of the herb.
This crackdown comes after the Ministry of Ayush noted that several manufacturers were still using leaf extracts despite previous advisories.
A multidisciplinary expert committee of Ayush Ministry recently updated the Ashwagandha safety dossier, concluding that while the root is a proven traditional remedy, the leaves contain high concentrations of reactive withanolides, such as Withaferin-A.
Scientific studies have suggested these compounds may pose health risks, leading to the strict prohibition of leaves in any crude or extract form.
Under the Food Safety and Standards Regulations of 2016, Ashwagandha roots are the only part of the plant listed as a permitted botanical for nutraceuticals and health supplements.
The FSSAI has now directed all Food Business Operators (FBOs) to ensure their formulations comply with these standards. Furthermore, the Ministry of Ayush has mandated that all drug manufacturers must clearly label the specific plant parts used in their products to ensure transparency and consumer safety.
To enforce these rules, the FSSAI has asked the State Food Safety Commissioners and Regional Directors to maintain strict vigilance and conduct regular inspections.
The advisory added that any company found using Ashwagandha leaves will face legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006.
