FSSAI invites comments following row over analogue sold as dairy
Monday, 12 May, 2025, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has invited comments from the general public on compliance of the provisions of the regulations related to analogue in dairy related products. A consultation paper was also issued on the subject.

The decision was taken in a meeting, at the FSSAI headquarters, on the compliance with the provision of analogue in dairy context after several reports were published about products like 'Analogue in Dairy Context’ were sold as ‘dairy products’.

FSSAI has already laid down the regulations for distinct labelling of ‘Analogue in Dairy Context’ to ensure their clear bifurcation with dairy products, however it is pertinent to mention that even Minister for Consumer Affairs had recently written to Ministry of Health to take action in reports related to fake paneer being sold across various markets.

According to the regulations, ‘Analogue in the Dairy Context’ means a product in which constituents not derived from milk take the place, in part or in whole, of any milk constituent(s) and the final product resembles, organoleptically and/or functionally, milk or milk product or composite milk product as defined.

The regulations also prescribe labelling requirements for the same, wherein it has to be mentioned on labels that ‘not derived from milk’ along with the name of the constituent including source. And for hotel, restaurants, and the catering services industry, it is laid down that the FBO selling cooked or prepared food shall display a notice board containing the nature of articles being exposed for sale.

The public is asked to comment on nomenclature of ‘Analogue in Dairy Context’ on label, label declaration for pre-packaged food when ‘analogue in dairy context’ is used as an ingredient, declaration of nature of food items served in HoReCa industry, prohibition in sale of ‘Analogue in Dairy Context’ in loose form, and restriction in FSSAI registration for food businesses manufacturing dairy analogue.
