FSSAI eyes pan-India presence; To set up 6 branch offices, 2 food labs

Aiming at pan-India presence, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), has decided to set up six new branch offices, four new import offices and two new food laboratories across the country.
Overall, the apex food regulator will have four regional offices situated in New Delhi (NCR), Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, 12 branch offices and six import offices.
In addition, it will have four national food laboratories at Kolkata, Ghaziabad (Delhi NCR), Mumbai JNPT and Chennai, while the two food laboratories, located at Sanauli and Raxaul on Indo-Nepal border, will be upgraded to oversee the food imports from Nepal.
FSSAI’s new branch offices will be in Bhopal, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad.
The new import offices will be at Attari, Kandla, Raxaul and Krishnapatnam. Besides, FSSAI plans to set up two new food laboratories at Mumbai JNPT and Chennai, and built-up space for the purpose is being taken on long-term lease from Chennai and JNPT Mumbai port authorities.
While inaugurating the north regional office of FSSAI at Ghaziabad, FSSAI chairperson Rita Teaotia said that the expansion of the network of FSSAI offices and laboratories is to ensure that FSSAI has a pan-India presence.
“This would help FSSAI to strengthen its inspection and enforcement activities and have better control of imported food. The locations of the new offices have been decided after taking into account the workload of food imports and Central licencing at various places. The work on identification of space for the new offices has been initiated,” she added.
