The National Food Regulator has extended the date of enforcement for labelling provisions under the FSS Alcoholic Beverages First Amendment Regulations, 2025, by six months. Now, these regulations shall come into effect from July 1, 2026, instead of January 1, 2026.
The said regulations, notified in June this year, were related to mead (honey wine), craft beer, wine-based beverages, alcoholic ready to drink products and Indian liquor along with some provisions related to labelling requirements.
As per FSSAI, it was in receipt of several representations from the stakeholders highlighting the fact that the alcoholic beverages are also governed under the State Excise Laws, and label registration is mandatory and generally aligned with the commencement of the excise year i.e. April 1 or in certain states, July 1.
"Mid-year change in labelling requirements would create significant operational difficulties, including disruption of business operations, wastage of pre-printed labels, additional costs associated with registration of label, amongst other," reads the representation made to FSSAI.
The food regulator, after considering the stated facts, has decided to extend the timeline for enforcement of the regulations.
"It has been decided to extend the date of enforcement upto 1st July 2026, for provision related to labelling under the FSS Alcoholic Beverages First Amendment Regulations, 2025," reads the direction.
