The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an urgent directive to all States and Union Territories to intensify vigil against the illegal use of prohibited chemicals to ripen seasonal fruits.
In an advisory, the regulatory body reiterated a strict ban on Calcium Carbide, commonly known as "Masala."
The chemical, often used in mangoes and papayas along with other similar fruits, poses severe health risks, including skin ulcers, respiratory issues and permanent eye damage.
The FSSAI warned that the mere presence of "Masala" on a trader's premises alongside fruits would now be treated as circumstantial evidence for immediate prosecution.
The order also addresses the misuse of Ethephon. While ethylene gas is an approved ripener, the FSSAI clarified that the practice of dipping fruits directly into liquid ethephon or using powder forms is strictly prohibited.
FSSAI has urged the states to take Enforcement Measures including intensified raids, on-the-spot testing and legal action against violators.
