The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) directive to Food Business Operators (FBOs) across the country to immediately discontinue the use of metallic pins, staple pins, wires, and similar materials in food packaging and food handling is a timely step toward strengthening food safety standards and modernising packaging practices, opine industry experts
The move follows multiple incidents in which metallic pins were reportedly found in cakes and packaged food products, raising significant concerns over consumer safety.
Bhushan Namdeorao Yengade, Founder of Binder Technology Consultancy and National Vice President of CPRTTF, said the advisory addresses a long-standing issue in the food industry. Recalling his early experiences in Parbhani, he noted that metallic pins were commonly used by local sweet shops, bakeries, and snack vendors to secure food packages. During his food technology studies, he observed staple pins from tea bags and takeaway pouches occasionally detaching and falling into beverages, often going unnoticed.
According to Yengade, while staple pins were once considered a low-cost and efficient packaging solution for small manufacturers, they pose a serious risk of consumer injury. He said the FSSAI directive would accelerate the adoption of safer, modern packaging practices and encourage manufacturers to upgrade their quality control systems.
Ashish Pandey, Director and Co-Founder of BuyBuyCart, also welcomed the decision, calling it a necessary measure to enhance consumer safety. He said even small components used in packaging can pose significant health risks if they come into contact with food and remain undetected by consumers.
Pandey added that as the food retail sector continues to evolve, ensuring safety across production, packaging, transportation, and consumption remains essential. He noted that the directive reinforces the need for tamper-proof, consumer-friendly packaging solutions that align with global food safety standards.
