The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an immediate directive banning the use of metallic pins, staple wires, and similar materials in all food products and packaging. The sweeping order targets food business operators (FBOs) nationwide, following numerous safety complaints from consumers.
According to the apex food safety regulator, metallic staples and wires are frequently used to secure takeaway parcels, sweet boxes, snack pouches, and cake boxes. More alarmingly, authorities highlighted a rising trend of using these sharp materials as structural or decorative supports inside cakes and artisanal bakery items.
The FSSAI emphasised that the risk of consumers inadvertently swallowing these hidden pins is a significant public health hazard. Embedded metallic elements pose a severe risk of internal injuries and choking if accidentally consumed.
Under the new mandate, all food businesses, ranging from local sweet shops and bakeries to commercial delivery services, must immediately adopt safer alternatives for sealing and decoration.
The regulatory body warned that any vendor or establishment found violating this directive will face strict penal action and heavy fines in accordance with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and its subsequent regulations.
“In the interest of public health and food safety, all FBOs are hereby directed to immediately discontinue the use of metallic pins/wires or any other such material for sealing, fastening, securing, or packaging any food item, food parcel, takeaway meal, bakery product, cake box, sweet box, snack packet, or any other food item or package,” reads the advisory issued by the FSSAI.
