FSSAI has decided to add more categories related to fruits and vegetables for the purpose of licensing food businesses. These categories include fresh, surface treated and minimally processed fruits and vegetables.
The direction by the food authority says that in order to avoid unnecessary hurdles and to facilitate the trade, as an interim measure, these food categories were being made available for licensing under the General Manufacturing kind of business on FoSCoS (Food Safety Compliance System) with immediate effect.
These include food category number 4.1.1.1: Untreated fresh fruits, 4.1.1.2: Surface-treated fresh fruits, 4.1.1.3: Peeled or cut, minimally processed fruit, 4.2.1.1: Untreated fresh vegetables (including mushrooms and fungi, roots and tubers, pulses and legumes (including soybeans), and aloevera), seaweeds, and nuts and seeds, 4.2.1.2: Surface-treated fresh vegetables (including mushrooms and fungi, roots and tubers, pulses and legumes, and aloevera), seaweeds and nuts and seeds, and 4.2.1.3: Peeled, cut or shredded minimally processed vegetables (including mushrooms and fungi, roots and tubers, fresh pulses and legumes, and aloevera) seaweeds, nuts and seeds.
According to the FSSAI, the authority got representation seeking clarification with respect to the Food Category for fresh fruits and vegetables after FSSAI issued an order wherein selection based approach for Standardised Food Products while applying for FSSAI licence (only Manufacturer/Processors) was explained under FSS (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations 2011.
An official with FSSAI explained that the stakeholders in their representation informed FSSAI that due to unavailability of food category mapped with the food products such as fresh fruits and vegetables including minimally processed fruits & vegetables and surface treated fruits & vegetables on FoSCoS, the FBOs were not being able to apply for licence under manufacturing/ re-packing kind of businesses for these products.
“On examining the matter, it was found that due to standards unavailability for these products in FSSR, these products were not listed in standardised products list along with their respective food categories on FoSCoS. And therefore, this direction is being implemented with immediate effect as an interim measure,” said the official.
