From a single cow to a ?2 crore dairy empire, PMFME empowers Odisha woman entrepreneur to scale new heights

The PM Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme, implemented by the Directorate of Industries, MSME Department, Government of Odisha in collaboration with Palladium as the State Project Management Unit, continues to drive rural entrepreneurship and women-led growth across the state.

Among its inspiring success stories is Anita Dash from Balasore, who turned a modest dairy venture into a ?2 crore enterprise. Beginning in 2012 with a single cow, Anita supplied milk to nearby households. As demand grew, she expanded her herd to 60 cows by 2015. However, supply disruptions led her to diversify — learning to make paneer, khoya, and chhena poda through online tutorials. The move transformed her business, leading to the creation of Krishna Dairy in 2021.

Seeking financial support to modernize her operations, Anita availed of a ?26.8 lakh loan under the PMFME scheme, facilitated by Palladium. With advanced machinery, her dairy’s production capacity rose to 5 quintals per day, yielding daily profits of ?10,000 and monthly earnings of ?3–4 lakhs. Her packaged dairy products now reach retail outlets across Balasore.

The PMFME initiative has provided credit-linked support to over 1,700 micro food enterprises and trained more than 9,300 beneficiaries in Odisha, with 35% of them being women.

“PMFME is enabling micro-entrepreneurs, especially women, to move from subsistence to success,” said Surya Kanta Behera, General Manager, District Industries Centre, Balasore.

Amit Patjoshi, CEO, Palladium India, added, “Anita’s journey showcases how access to finance, skills, and markets can empower rural entrepreneurs to scale and sustain thriving businesses.”
