Food Recycler: A touch of innovative technologies to enable sustainable farming

Uncountable amounts of financial and natural resources are lost when food is wasted. It has been observed that food waste is the most chronic crisis on the planet that can increase greenhouse gas emissions. By limiting food wastage, we can reduce the emission of harmful gases and curb the unnecessary loss of natural resources.

Unfortunately, a significant portion of food waste comes from eatables that are in good condition and are thrown away before their expiry dates. Such unconsumed foods are sent to landfill sites where they contribute to air pollution. Thus, several start-ups and businesses invest in the recycling of food items as this sector is still emerging and there is a lot of potential for new business ideas. For instance, food recyclers have gained new importance over the last few years.

Several governments have taken initiatives to increase the recycling of food waste and impose regulations that encourage the use of food recyclers on a larger scale. For instance, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation commissioner Basil Seggos recently proposed regulations to introduce new waste reduction initiatives to prevent landfills with food scraps. The regulations would demand composting and donation of useable, edible food by large food scraps generator to encourage reuse of materials that otherwise end up in landfills.

While some families in New York struggle to put food on the table, food waste is one of the most pressing issues the city faces. This imbalance can be regulated with the support of organisations and citizens.

Apart from this, several companies have launched their unique food recycles that are suitable for the household to use and take care of the food waste at home instead of a government-led facility.

Reencle, a new business venture in the food recycler industry, recently announced to run Indiegogo campaign for their food recycler products. As per the company, their flagship food recycler can decompose up to 2lb of food waste in merely 24 hours and offers 98% value to nature with its organic mix.

Reencle food recycler is easy to use and can compost food in the most natural way. Customers only have to add Reencle organic additives and water to the food waste and the device will work on the mix and decompose the mix in 24 hours. Over 49,000 units of food recycler are already sold in Korea and now the company aims to increase the global distribution.

Similarly, Tero, an award-winning food recycle has gained popularity in the residential sector due to its easy to use, countertop design. The device is manufactured in Canada and it converts all kinds of food waste into natural fertiliser for plants, lawns, and gardens in as little as three hours. The device has state-of-the-art grinding and drying technology that reduces food waste volume by 90% which includes leftovers such as dairy products, avocado seeds, meat, chicken bones, poultry, and fish into nutrient-rich fertiliser.

Several companies have developed novel methods to convert food waste into fertilisers within a few hours and use them in farming and include them directly into the supply chain. Using traditional methods, composting takes weeks and months, but innovations in technology have enabled to create liquid fertilisers in matter of hours. The demand for such fertilisers has increased as they are easier to transport and cheaper to use.

The collaboration between fertilisers made at home and farms can create a sustainable ecosystem. Farmers can use these fertilisers using their spraying trucks without making additional investments. In addition, these organic fertilisers made from food waste contribute fewer toxins to the soil, enriching the quality of plants and animals.

The rise in awareness about food recyclers among people and the increase in inclination toward sustainable life practices drive the demand for food recyclers. The rise in shortage of food and decrease in the quality of plants has increased the importance of organic farming, which will benefit the demand for food recyclers in the future.
