Fermenta Biotech Ltd has inaugurated the Fermenta – Centre of Excellence for Food Fortification at the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management–Thanjavur (NIFTEM-T), aimed at advancing research, innovation and practical applications in food fortification.
The Centre has been developed as a collaborative initiative involving the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), Government of India; NIFTEM-T; Fermenta Biotech; and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN).
The facility was inaugurated by Dr Ranjit Singh, Joint Secretary, MoFPI, in the presence of Prof V Palanimuthu, Director, NIFTEM-T; Prashant Nagre, Managing Director, Fermenta Biotech; and Dr Bhuvaneswari Balasubramanian, Country Director, GAIN India.
The Centre will focus on translating food-fortification science into practical applications through the development, demonstration and dissemination of fortified food technologies. It will support research, knowledge exchange and collaborative initiatives aimed at developing scalable fortification solutions aligned with India's nutritional requirements.
Its initial focus will include fortification opportunities in commonly consumed staples such as edible oil and wheat flour. The Centre will also facilitate industry exposure for students, sponsored research, technology transfer, and engagement with food startups and innovators.
According to Fermenta, the facility is intended to bridge the gap between scientific research and real-world implementation by supporting the development and validation of commercially viable fortification solutions.
Prashant Nagre said the Centre would help take innovation in food fortification from the laboratory to foods that can be produced, adopted and consumed at scale. He added that Fermenta would contribute its expertise in nutritional ingredients, premixes and fortification to support technically sound and industry-relevant solutions.
Prof V Palanimuthu said the Centre would provide a platform for applied research, technology development, demonstration, capacity building, industry–academia collaboration and knowledge exchange in food fortification.
Dr Bhuvaneswari Balasubramanian said the Centre marks a milestone in the partnership between Fermenta and NIFTEM-T, with GAIN facilitating the collaboration. She highlighted the role of public-private partnerships in building capacity and addressing malnutrition at scale.
With the facility now operational, the partners will focus on moving fortification solutions from concept and validation towards practical adoption across India's food-processing ecosystem.
