FDA Thane raid yields gutkha and pan masala stocks worth Rs 2.74 crore

The FDA Thane, following a tipoff received by S S Desai, Joint Commissioner, FDA Thane, regarding stock and sales of prohibited articles at Kharabav, Bhiwandi District, Thane, raided the premises and took into custody stocks of different brands of gutkha and pan masala worth Rs 2,74,52,700. Following the raid, the premises was sealed. The said premises was used as a function hall earlier. Sale and consumption of gutkha and pan masala has been banned in Maharashtra since 2012.
The raid was carried out under the guidance of Food Safety Commissioner (Maharashtra state) Dr Pallavi Darade and in presence of Desai. It was supervised by Assistant Commissioner Bhivandi Zone - 05 Dr Bhushan More, along with Food Safety Officers Manik Jadhav, Santosh Wazarkar, Shankar Rathod and Manish Sanap.
The FIR was launched u/s 26(2)(i), 26(2)(iv), 27(2)(e), 30(2)(a) of Food Safety and Standards Act and Section 188, 272, 273, 328 of IPC against vendor Amarbahadur Ramkhilavan Saroj, landlord Umakant Narayan Kate, owners of the prohibited articles Faizal and Raju Gupta.
