The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Thane, has launched a series of raids across various locations in Thane, Maharashtra. Recent checks by the authority revealed serious issues, including adulteration of foods and non-compliance.

In this regard, Suresh Deshmukh, Joint Commissioner, Kokan division, said, "The main objective of Food Safety and Standards Act (2006) is to ensure availability of safe food for human consumption. Also to achieve this object we are conducting raids of suspected food. The main reason for conducting raids is for food safety and ensuring safe food in the market."

In a recent operation, the FDA, in collaboration with local law enforcement personnel, descended upon Waghela Tea Depot, a prominent establishment in Thane. The action was initiated by a formal complaint lodged by social activist Shashi Agarwal, and one more agency. The joint effort culminated in a raid that exposed the reality of adulterated tea powder being peddled to unsuspecting customers. During the raid they seized the adulterated tea powder worth Rs 8,69,000.

"As per the Food Safety and Standards Act, tea powder is not allowed to contain or mixed with food colour or any food colours. While we conducted the raid we observed that tea powder had food colours and in amount more than 1,200 ppm. According to rules, the colour consumption should be 200 ppm. Therefore we conducted a raid and seized it. Similar raids were also conducted and this was the third raid." he added.

Further, the District Office carried out an inspection by a team led by Food and Drug Administration Officials. The team found several lapses in a shop's operations and violation of permit and licence norms, and ordered its immediate closure. The shop was found to be manufacturing sweets and 'farsan' (salty snacks) without due permission from the FDA.

These raids and investigations underscore the FDA's unyielding commitment to ensuring the integrity of the food and beverage landscape within Thane. The agency's vigilance will persist through regular inspections aimed at enforcing compliance and maintaining the welfare of residents.
