Dr M S Swaminathan, father of green revolution, passes away at the age of 98

Dr M S Swaminathan, eminent agriculture economist, who was popularly known as the father of green revolution, passed away at the age of 98.
PM Narendra Modi in his condolence message said, “At a very critical period in our nation’s history, his ground-breaking work in agriculture transformed the lives of millions and ensured food security for our nation.”
He added that beyond his revolutionary contributions to agriculture, Dr Swaminathan was a powerhouse of innovation and a nurturing mentor to many. His unwavering commitment to research and mentorship has left an indelible mark on countless scientists and innovators.
Dr Swaminathanon obtaining a postgraduate degree in cytogenetics in 1949, from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Cambridge.
He did his post-doctoral research at the University of Wisconsin. In 1954, Dr Swaminathan joined the Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI), Cuttack and later, IARI. In July 1966, he became IARI director, the post he held till 1972. It was during this stint in his long career that he shot to fame.
Dr Swaminathan, was also a recipient of the Padma Shri in 1967, was chosen for the Ramon Magsaysay award for community leadership in 1971. He was awarded the ‘Padma Bhushan’ in January 1972.
