A DNA test report on June 27, has revealed that the severed piece of human finger in the ice cream cone case, belonged to Omkar Pote, who works at Fortune Dairy Industries, Pune. The local police had collected blood samples, along with the severed finger for forensic testing, upon receiving the results it was confirmed that the severed finger belonged to Pote.
This incident came to light when Brandon Serrao, a doctor who lives in Orlem, Malad West, Mumbai, filed an FIR with the Malad West police after discovering a severed piece of human finger in a Yummo’s butterscotch ice cream of the parent company Walko QSR Company Pvt. Ltd., which he had ordered through delivery app Zepto, earlier in June.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has conducted an inspection at the premises of Fortune Dairy Industries. The company is a third-party manufacturer, in Indapur taluka of Pune.
Ulhas Ingawale, Joint Commissioner – Food, FDA Maharashtra – Mumbai, said, “We conduct regular inspections, last year we collected 275 ice cream samples and sent them for testing. We found 26 sub-standard quality ice creams and took appropriate action against those manufacturers. With regard to the severed finger found in the ice cream cone case which took place in Malad West, the Fortune Dairy factory in Indapur, Pune, has been shut and a case has been registered against the culprits, the local police officials will continue the investigation. We also regularly inspect food processing facilities and instruct FBOs to follow Food Safety and Standards guidelines. For those that do not follow the guidelines, strict action is taken against them.”
