In a major push to strengthen the fisheries and aquaculture sector, the Department of Fisheries, Government of India, has intensified efforts on skill development and capacity building under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). Emphasizing these components as key drivers for modernizing the fisheries value chain, the initiative aims to enhance productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and build robust marketing linkages by developing human and institutional capabilities across the country.

On National Fish Farmers Day recently Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh) released the Training & Capacity Building Programme Calendar for Fisheries Institutes of ICAR and its Regional Centres, alongside a similar calendar by the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) and ICAR. The comprehensive schedule outlines training sessions, exposure visits, and knowledge-sharing activities planned for 2025–27, providing a structured roadmap to empower fishers and fish farmers.

The programmes are designed to upgrade technical skills and promote scientific practices in areas such as hatchery operations, advanced grow-out techniques, integrated and composite fish culture, fish health management, feed formulation, seaweed cultivation, and value-added processing. Special emphasis has been placed on modern aquaculture systems including Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS), Biofloc Technology, cage culture, and ornamental fish breeding, enabling diversification and expansion of operations. Initiatives also focus on livelihood enhancement through ornamental fisheries, fish marketing linkages, and women-centric value-added products.

Funded with a budget of Rs 2.93 crore through NFDB, the capacity building programmes run under PMMSY and PM-MKSSY cover short-term and long-duration courses, workshops, conferences, and Training of Trainers modules. In the past six months alone, 499 training programmes have been conducted, benefiting 22,921 participants across the country and equipping them with modern practices and technologies.

This initiative not only strengthens the technical backbone of the fisheries sector but also contributes to food security, nutritional well-being, employment generation, and socio-economic growth of fishing communities nationwide.
