Danone expands global innovation capabilities with new investment in Singapore Digital Lab
Saturday, 14 June, 2025, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Singapore
Danone announced a new phase of investment in Danone’s Digital Lab (D-Lab) in Singapore, reinforcing the company’s commitment to advancing digital health innovation and expanding its global research and innovation (R&I) footprint. The company will accelerate the D-Lab’s capabilities in digital science, data analytics, and AI-driven health solutions with a particular focus on healthy nutrition for an aging population – a growing public health priority in the region.

It will advance the delivery of science-based, consumer-centric innovations that are tailored to regional needs and scalable globally. This reflects the long-standing partnership between the company and the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), including a joint initiative linked to digital health in 2018, that was launched at the time of the inauguration of its OneBiome Lab Singapore with a focus on studying the gut microbiome.

With the support of EDB, the Agency of Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and other local institutions, it has built and grown a thriving ecosystem in Singapore to advance digital health services. These services, which enable early screening, continuous monitoring, and nutritional management of health conditions, are now serving as a model to be rolled out and scaled globally.

Christian Stammkoetter, Danone’s president of Asia, Middle East and Africa, said, “Singapore is a global innovation hub with a vibrant ecosystem of scientific talent, world-class experts and strong institutional partnerships. By bringing together local insight with our global expertise in science-based innovation, we see powerful opportunities to address demographic challenges like aging, a rising priority across the region. Through digital technologies, we aim to turn data into actionable insights that improve health outcomes locally and globally.”

Chan Ih-Ming, executive vice president, Digital Economy and Hub Service Industry Group, EDB, said, “We are proud to support Danone’s continued R&D efforts to unlock wider opportunities such as better health management and preventive healthcare. The next phase of D-Lab will complement Singapore’s healthy aging initiatives and also strengthen Singapore’s position as a global health innovation hub for companies to develop and scale their solutions globally.”

The company’s Research & Innovation network spans multiple continents, anchored by flagship centres such as the Daniel Carasso Centre in Paris-Saclay, France, and the Nutricia Research Centre in Utrecht, Netherlands. With €30 million invested over the past five years by the company, the Singapore facility exemplifies its dedication to advancing digital transformation in healthcare. A pivotal part of this network, the centre develops proprietary technologies that generate actionable insights and deliver specialised nutrition services for patients, parents, and healthcare professionals—strategically aligned with Asia’s evolving health needs.

These include tools like the Iron Tracker, a non-invasive screening tool for iron-deficiency anaemia; the Stool Tracker, which utilises AI-powered image recognition systems to help parents assess their baby’s stool consistency easily and objectively; and the Growth Tracker, which monitors the growth and proper development of children. These tools have been rolled out across various markets globally. Together, these R&I efforts reflect its broader ambition to lead in health-focused food innovation and advance its mission of bringing health through food to as many people as possible.
