CSIR-CFTRI takes TECHBHARAT 2022 platform to launch instant beverage mix & unit
Friday, 20 May, 2022, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Nandita Vijay, Bengaluru
CSIR-CFTRI researchers have presented an instant beverage mix from malted ragi and Mobile Food Processing and Demonstration Unit for farmers at TECHBHARAT 2022.

The  instant ragi beverage mix can be reconstituted in hot or cold milk and consumed by any  age group. The product exhibits more than 6 months of shelf life. The uniqueness is that similar products existing in the present market contain mainly extracted solids from barley malt as a base material  of a minimum 60 to 70% level.

The  product, according to the researchers of CSIR-CFTRI, contains flour from malted grains at 30% level with ragi as a main ingredient and the content of barley malt extract has been reduced to 18%. No product in the commercial market uses the flour from malted cereals directly especially from ragi. • Protein content of the market products is about 11% only, they added.

The Mysuru-based institute has also  developed a Mobile Food Processing and Demonstration Unit with a major objective of on-site demonstration of food processing techniques to farmers. This will help to create awareness about the advantages of food processing, particularly during excess production, and encourage them to take up value addition at farm-level, by converting into semi-finished or finished products.

Although, the unit is primarily designed for processing tomato to convert it in to products like Puree, Ketchup, Sauce, Juice, Paste, Chutney, Dehydrated Slice, Slices in pouch, Tomato-Onion Chutney, Curry etc., it can also be used for other food processing operations.
The key equipment in the mobile unit are steam generator, fruit mill, pulper, kettle and packaging machine for filling of products in bottles and cans. The unit also has laboratory to carry out a few basic tests at the site. It has  commodity based processing lines to operate in different locations and also throughout the year for mango, orange, potato, onion etc.  It  also helps to showcase all  technologies of CSIR-CFTRI to farmers, Self-Help Groups  and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) at their place and encourage them to become entrepreneurs.

Incidentally the CSIR-CFTRI is in sync with the TECHBHARAT 2022 being held from May 19-21 at its campus in Mysuru. The event is held at Laghu Udyog Bharati-Karnataka and IMS Foundation . On the occasion, the institute also maximised the platform to launch free technologies and facilitate the technology transfer for  Amla Candy,  Cereal flakes,  Rice,  Chicken soup mix,  Composite Ragi Bread, Curing of new paddy,  Fruit spread,  Ginger dehydration,  Green Chilli sauce,  Parboiling of paddy: hot soak method,  Parboiling of paddy: dry heat method, Protein enriched buns,  Ready mix: Idli,  Ready spice mix formulation - Sambar ,  Ready to use dosa batter in retail packs,  Ready to use idli batter in retail packs, Refined millet flour, Rice Milk mix,  Turmeric curing and polishing,  Leaf cup machine,  Hand and leg operated  Papad press pedal operation, Millet dehuller and ready beverage.
