Columbia could emerge as a key alternative palm oil supplier for India as global biofuel policies shift and the demand for edible oils continues to grow worldwide. Shankar Thakkar, national president of the All-India Edible Oil Traders Federation, stated that developing alternative supply sources is a critical requirement for India to ensure long-term edible oil security.
Since major palm oil producing nations like Indonesia and Malaysia are increasing palm oil blending in biofuels, the availability of palm oil for food consumption may be affected in the future, prompting Indian traders to reduce dependency on traditional sources.
Columbia, which is the world's fourth-largest palm oil producer, offers significant trade opportunities for India, the world's largest importer of vegetable oils. Columbia recently supplied around 200,000 tonnes of palm oil to India, laying a foundation to expand edible oil trade between the two countries.
“By expanding trade with alternative suppliers such as Colombia, India can diversify its import mix, reduce exposure to global market shifts, and reinforce long-term food supply security,” said Thakkar.
To further explore these opportunities, a delegation of Indian edible oil traders plans to visit Columbia early next year. The visit aims to help traders understand the local palm oil industry, production capacity, export prospects, and commercial collaboration opportunities.
During this visit, the delegation is expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Fedepalma, Columbia's National Federation of Oil Palm Growers, establishing a structured framework for long-term institutional cooperation between both parties.
