Collo’s RF sensor technology helps beverage plants save 4 million litres of water annually

Helsinki, Finland
A new breakthrough in liquid process technology by Finnish deep tech company Collo is helping global food and beverage manufacturers reduce water consumption while increasing production efficiency. The company has revealed new data showing that its real-time sensing technology enables factories to scale production without increasing water intake, addressing a critical challenge faced by manufacturers operating under strict water availability and environmental regulations.

According to the company, its radio frequency (RF) measurement technology replaces traditional sensing methods that have remained largely unchanged for over 140 years. Unlike legacy sensors that measure only electrical conductivity or rely on optical readings, Collo’s analyser can detect the molecular composition of liquids and identify the precise moment when industrial pipelines are fully clean during cleaning cycles.

Data from a high-capacity beverage manufacturing facility showed that the technology revealed an optimisable potential of 23 minutes per cleaning cycle. By providing accurate real-time information on the cleaning process, the system allows manufacturers to reduce unnecessary rinsing and cleaning downtime.

The results are significant for large-scale manufacturing plants. The technology can help save nearly 4 million litres of treated water annually, based on an estimated saving of 1,568 litres per cleaning cycle across 5,000 annual cycles. In addition, the system has enabled a 24 per cent reduction in cleaning downtime, allowing companies to reclaim lost production time.

Many global beverage plants operate under strict water permits that cap their production capacity because of limited water availability. Due to the limitations of conventional sensors, manufacturers often rely on fixed-time cleaning cycles and over-rinse pipelines to maintain hygiene standards. This practice leads to substantial water wastage and operational inefficiencies.

Jani Puroranta, CEO of Collo, said water waste should not be viewed only as a sustainability issue but also as a growth constraint for manufacturing facilities. According to him, outdated sensing technology often forces plants to waste large volumes of water during cleaning processes, limiting their ability to expand production.

Collo’s RF-based technology works by transmitting an electromagnetic field through the entire liquid flow, providing volumetric transparency and enabling real-time monitoring of the cleaning process.

The technology is already being used by major global food and beverage companies such as Coca-Cola, Danone and Valio to detect product deviations and prevent quality failures before products leave the factory.
