Coimbatore hosts 18th edition of Agri Intex; Focus on micro irrigation

Agri Intex 2018, the 18th essay of India’s prime agricultural trade fair, concluded in CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex, Coimbatore, recently. The special focus of the four-day event, which covered a gross area of about 2,80,000sq ft and was aimed at transforming Indian agriculture, was on solar pumping, micro irrigation, precision farming, farm mechanisation, soilless agriculture, automation, value addition and animal husbandry.
The highlights of the fair were the conferences on game-changing trends in dairy farming-2018 and tools and techniques for bio-nutrition farming, which took place on its second and fourth day, respectively.
In addition to these, there was a live demonstration of soilless agriculture, an integrated live model farm to showcase sustainable and effective practices, a live demonstration of solar pumping, farm mechanisation, post-harvesting solution and participation by animal husbandry and fisheries universities.
The sectors that displayed their offerings at the fair included agriculture machinery and implements; irrigation systems and automation; animal husbandry and dairy farming; fencing and shade nets; greenhouses, foggers and roof gardens; financial institutions; weighing scales and testing equipment; packaging industries; pond linings, sheets, tarpaulins and grow bags; coir substrate; educational and research institutions, aquaculture, renewable energy, social forestry and government departments.
The products on display included pumps, pipes, cables and wires; fertilisers, manures and pesticides; seeds, nursery and landscapes; tyres; food processing machinery; nutrient supplements and crop management; garden and hand tools; crates and material handling and apiary.
While there were 450 participants representing 13 Indian states (Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal) and nine countries (China, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States), the number of visitors that attended the fair was about 10,000.
They represented the implement and machinery manufacturing sectors, which provide solutions to small and marginal farmers to offset the shortage of skilled and trained farm labour.

Husqvarna (India) Products Private Limited, Chennai, was the principal sponsor; the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Chennai, and Andreas Stihl Pvt Ltd, Pune were the platinum sponsors, and Linga Chemicals, Madurai, was the silver sponsor.
Dignitaries S P Velumani, minister of municipal administration, rural development and implementation of special programmes, Government of Tamil Nadu, was the special guest.
R Doraikkannu, minister of agriculture, Government of Tamil Nadu, was the chief guest. Pollachi V Jayaraman, deputy speaker, Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly was the guest of honour.
K Ramasamy, vice-chancellor, TNAU, Coimbatore, presided over the event.
There were felicitations by T N Hariharan, district collector, Coimbatore, and K Vijayakarthikeyan, commissioner, Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation.
