Switzerland-based specialty chemicals company Clariant has received European Commission approval for its renewable rice bran wax additives for use in food-contact plastics, marking a major regulatory milestone for sustainable packaging solutions.
The authorization follows a positive safety assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and was formalized under Regulation (EU) 2026/245, amending Annex I to Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 on plastic materials intended for food contact. The approval covers Clariant’s Licocare RBW 100-300 series, including Licocare RBW 360 Vita and RBW 560 Vita.
The additives are now authorized for use at concentrations of up to 0.3% in polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polylactic acid (PLA), and rigid polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials intended for contact with non-fatty foods. The scope includes applications at room temperature and below, as well as hot-fill processes and heating up to 100°C for up to two hours.
With the amendment entering into force on February 23, 2026, European plastics manufacturers can incorporate the bio-based additives into packaging formulations while meeting stringent EU food safety standards. The approval complements existing food-contact clearances from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Japanese authorities, strengthening Clariant’s global regulatory framework.
According to the company, its rice bran wax additives offer up to 70% lower carbon footprint compared to fossil-based montan wax, which is derived from lignite coal and faces structural supply constraints due to depleting deposits in Germany. The renewable alternative aims to address supply chain disruptions and price volatility while supporting sustainability targets.
Beyond regulatory compliance, the Licocare RBW Vita range delivers processing benefits such as lubrication, mould release, nucleation, and improved dispersion properties. The additives are also biodegradable and industrially compostable, aligning with circular economy and Scope 3 emissions reduction goals.
Clariant said the EU approval positions the company as a key partner for manufacturers transitioning toward renewable, internationally compliant solutions in the evolving food packaging sector.
