Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an advisory asking the state Food Safety Commissioners to check the scope of testing of primary notified or referral laboratories before sending any samples for analysis.

According to the FSSAI, it was brought to its notice that samples including one part of the food sample to be analysed as per the FBO’s request were being sent to the laboratories not capable of testing the said product or parameter.

FSSAI, in a statement, said that it was advised that the scope of testing of the laboratory may be checked before sending samples for analysis. An official with the FSSAI said that it was done to ensure that the analysis reports were legally and technically valid.

The advisory by the FSSAI says that the broad scope and food categories were mentioned in the validity order available on FSSAI website.

FSSAI has also advised all the Central licensing authorities and Commissioners of Food Safety of all states that to view the details of product and parameters they can visit the NABL website and look for laboratory search.

The official with FSSAI says that NABL website has the details of accredited laboratories and the details of validity list for all notified labs. From the same website, a detailed record of lab name and scope of accreditation could be found.

“Certification of Accreditation shows the accreditation certificate issued by NABL to the lab, including the date of issue and expiry of the accreditation while ‘Scope of Accreditation’ shows the broad discipline, products and parameters, test method specification that the lab utilises for food testing,” says the official.

Meanwhile, the advisory says that in case of any ambiguity or clarification, the state officials can reach the FSSAI directly.
