The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) announced today the accelerated rollout of two flagship infrastructure-development schemes the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD) and the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF) aimed at strengthening India’s dairy sector and supporting small and marginal dairy farmers.
Under NPDD, the Centre is funding the establishment and upgrading of milk procurement, processing, and chilling infrastructure, along with installation of quality-testing equipment. As part of promoting sustainable and climate-resilient dairy practices, 52 solar-powered Bulk Milk Coolers (BMCs) have been sanctioned to support village-level dairy cooperatives operated under solar photovoltaic (SPV) and Thermal Storage System (TSS) solutions.
Complementing this, AHIDF provides financial assistance to milk unions, cooperatives, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), SHGs and private entrepreneurs for modernizing milk-processing units, setting up value-added dairy plants, chilling infrastructure, and energy-efficient or renewable energy systems. Under these provisions, three dairy unions — in Barauni (Bihar), Banaskantha (Gujarat) and Ernakulam (Kerala) have already received support for setting up solar-powered dairy processing units.
In addition to infrastructure grants, the government continues to back genetic upgradation and scientific cattle-rearing under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM). Through RGM, a nationwide artificial insemination programme has covered 9.36 crore animals, with 14.56 crore inseminations performed, benefiting 5.62 crore farmers. Further, indigenous sex-sorted semen production has scaled up significantly, reducing cost per dose and increasing semen inventory.
Other interventions under RGM include establishment of 24 IVF labs, supply of high-merit bulls (4,288 pedigree bulls so far), strengthening of 47 semen stations, and extensive farmer outreach via fertility camps, calf-rearing rallies and awareness programmes.
With these measures, the government aims to bridge power and processing infrastructure gaps, raise milk productivity, and enhance income for small and marginal dairy farmers reinforcing its commitment to building a resilient and modern dairy ecosystem in India.
