In a major decision aimed at supporting farmers in Tamil Nadu, the Central Government has approved the procurement of copra and Totapuri mangoes during 2026 under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) and the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS), respectively. The approval, granted by Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan, is intended to ensure remunerative prices for growers and protect them from distress sales arising from market fluctuations.
Acting on a proposal submitted by the Tamil Nadu Government, the Centre has sanctioned the procurement of 87,226 metric tonnes (MT) of copra in the state. The approved quantity includes 87,000 MT of milling copra and 226 MT of ball copra.
The procurement will be undertaken at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) under the Price Support Scheme, with the total MSP value of the approved procurement exceeding Rs. 1,049.16 crore.
According to the government, the MSP-backed procurement is expected to provide income security to copra growers by ensuring that their produce is purchased at the notified support price, even in the event of declining market prices.
In a separate decision, the Centre has also approved the procurement of 96,879 MT of Totapuri mangoes in Tamil Nadu during 2026 under the Market Intervention Scheme.
The procurement will be carried out at a Market Intervention Price (MIP) of Rs. 1,545.41 per quintal. The measure aims to stabilise prices and ensure that Totapuri mango growers receive fair returns for their produce, particularly during periods of market oversupply or sharp price declines.
The twin approvals for copra and Totapuri mango procurement are expected to provide significant relief to farmers across Tamil Nadu by improving price realisation, reducing the risk of distress sales, and strengthening rural incomes. The Centre said such interventions are aimed at enhancing farmers' income security and reinforcing confidence in the agricultural sector.
