Campco reiterates Arecanut-health benefits to support farming community

CAMPCO, which deals in Arecanut and cocoa, is underscoring the big benefits of Arecanut. This is in an effort to protect the interest of the domestic Arecanut farmers. In this regard, the company is sending out a request to Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi to issue instructions to the concerned offices for conducting a thorough scientific research on the health benefits of Arecanut and thus maintain the morale of the farmers.
The move follows information circulated on the harmful effects of betel nut on human health, without any proven scientific evidences. This according to Campco has been not only misleading but also hurt the sentiments of the Arecanut farmers of the region.
Arecanut finds a very significant place in all religious, social and cultural functions and has a long history in Ayurveda medicine dating to as far back as the Charaka Samhita. India is the largest Arecanut growing country in the world, stated Campco in its communication to the media.
Arecanut is having a plethora of medicinal properties both for human beings and livestock. It has several medicinal properties such as decreasing Diabetes, Cholesterol, Alzheimer’s disease, killing several pathogenic bacteria, fungi, protozoan parasites etc. It has anti-HIV and AIDS, Antimalarial, Antihelmintic properties too. It helps in reducing pain and curing wounds and ulcers etc. It has got good Anti-venom properties, said the company.
Time and again it has been proved that Arecanut alone is not at all carcinogenic. Recent studies conducted by competent research institutes, domestic as well as international, have proved positive results.
Way back in the year 1974, the scientists from Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, have reported that Arecanut cures Cancer. The same has also been substantiated by a group of eminent scientists in the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, Atlanta, USA. In China, already more than 30 medicines have been prepared using Arecanut and this is being practiced even now as reported in “Materia Medica”. To that extent Campco has already initiated measures for research work by allotting the same to reputed research institutes having international reputation, said the company.
