Brevel Ltd., a microalgae innovation company, has introduced Purallis a clean-label chlorella ingredient for the nutraceutical sector, produced using its proprietary illuminated fermentation technology. The innovation aims to address growing global demand for standardised, high-purity chlorella used in health supplements, functional foods, and wellness products.
Traditionally, around 90 percent of the global chlorella supply is cultivated in open freshwater ponds that rely on sunlight for growth. However, chlorella is known as a bioaccumulator, meaning it can absorb pollutants and heavy metals from surrounding water and air. This often creates challenges in maintaining purity, consistency, and safety in the supply chain.
According to Yonatan Golan, Co-founder and CEO of Brevel, the company’s illuminated fermentation platform offers a solution by producing chlorella in a closed, sterile indoor system. “The strict requirements for purity, consistency and safety have strained the supply of chlorella. Our platform enables the production of ultra-pure, highly nutritious chlorella in a consistent and scalable manner,” he said.
Brevel’s proprietary technology combines light with fermentation inside controlled bioreactors, enabling high-yield production of microalgae. Traditionally, fermentation takes place in dark environments, but Brevel’s system integrates light to replicate photosynthesis while maintaining the efficiency of fermentation, making it possible to produce high-quality chlorella at industrial scale.
The company also addresses one of chlorella’s biological limitations — its thick, indigestible cell wall. Brevel uses a mechanical bead-milling process to break open the algae cells, releasing nutrients without using harsh chemicals or high heat.
The global chlorella market, currently valued at around USD 328 million, is expected to grow to USD 486 million by the early 2030s, driven by increasing demand for plant-based, sustainable and nutrient-dense ingredients. Scientifically known as Chlorella vulgaris, chlorella is considered a nutrient-rich superfood containing around 50 percent protein, essential amino acids, vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, iron, antioxidants, chlorophyll and polyphenols.
Brevel stated that Purallis chlorella can be incorporated into nutraceutical supplements, functional foods and beverages, sports nutrition products, and formulations focused on metabolic health, healthy aging and longevity.
The product is manufactured under internationally recognised standards including HACCP and FSSC 22000, and is certified kosher, halal and non-GMO, ensuring year-round supply for global nutraceutical and food industries.
