Balrampur Chini Mills Limited, one of India’s leading sugar producers, is set to establish the country’s first large-scale polylactic acid (PLA) bioplastics plant by October 2026 under its new green brand Bioyug. The Rs 2,850-crore project marks a major step toward sustainable industrial innovation, using sugarcane as the primary raw material to produce 80,000 tonnes of compostable, low-emission plastics annually.
According to executive director Avantika Saraogi, the Bioyug initiative aligns with Balrampur Chini’s long-term vision of integrating renewable resources into mainstream manufacturing. “PLA, derived from renewable sources like sugarcane, offers a greener, more sustainable alternative to conventional petroleum-based plastics,” she said, adding that while current production costs are higher, larger-scale operations will bring competitiveness over time.
The project is expected to position India among the few global players capable of producing PLA bioplastics domestically, reducing reliance on imports and supporting the government’s ‘Make in India’ and circular economy initiatives.
Balrampur Chini aims to diversify its portfolio, targeting 50% of its revenue from green sources such as ethanol, co-generation power, and PLA bioplastics by FY27–28. The Bioyug project underscores the company’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and carbon reduction within India’s sugar industry.
Industry experts view this development as a significant milestone for India’s bio-economy, as the demand for eco-friendly packaging and biodegradable materials continues to grow across sectors. With the Bioyug PLA plant, Balrampur Chini is set to lead the next phase of India’s green transition — combining agricultural strength with cutting-edge clean technology to create a sustainable future.
