Australia is looking to expand its agricultural exports to India by leveraging the opportunities created under the bilateral Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) signed between the two countries. The move is expected to deepen agricultural trade ties and further strengthen the economic partnership between the two nations.

According to Australian trade officials, the country is keen to increase shipments of products such as sheep meat, lamb, avocados, almonds, and pulses to the Indian market. The ECTA, which came into force in December 2022, has opened the door for greater market access for several agricultural products and is now moving into the implementation stage.

The agreement has already played a key role in boosting bilateral trade. Discussions are also underway between India and Australia for a broader Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), which aims to expand cooperation beyond trade in goods to areas such as critical minerals, healthcare, technology, science, and agriculture.

Trade relations between the two countries have witnessed strong growth in recent years. India has emerged as Australia’s fifth-largest trading partner, with total two-way trade in goods and services reaching $54.4 billion in 2024–25. During the same period, Australia exported goods worth $35 billion to India, while imports from India stood at $19.3 billion.

Agricultural trade has also seen significant momentum. Exports of Australian agricultural, fisheries, and forestry products to India surged by 88 per cent to $3 billion in FY25, compared to $1.6 billion in FY23. This growth reflects the expanding opportunities created by the trade agreement and the increasing demand for diverse agricultural products in the Indian market.

Meanwhile, India also exports several agricultural commodities to Australia, including cotton, cashew, coffee, dairy products, fruits, and tea. As trade engagement continues to deepen, both countries are expected to benefit from improved market access and stronger cooperation in the agriculture sector.
