Arecanut growers cautioned against sub-standard imports

The Central Arecanut & Cocoa Marketing & Processing Cooperative Ltd (CAMPCO Ltd.) is concerned over the fact that imported sub-standard arecanut is finding its way into the domestic market and is reportedly being mixed with locally produced arecanut before being sold. Such practices have the potential to adversely affect the quality, reputation and market value of Indian arecanut.
The Manguluru-based cooperative has received information indicating that sub-standard imported arecanut is being locally blended with domestically produced arecanut and supplied through local trade channels. As a result, the market is gradually being flooded with mixed-quality produce, causing concern among genuine arecanut growers and consumers alike. This may push arecanut market prices down to an unfavourable level.
This trend not only undermines the quality standards of Indian arecanut but also poses a serious threat to the livelihood of lakhs of domestic arecanut farmers who have consistently produced quality produce through hard work and sustainable farming practices, according to a communication issued by SR Satishchandra, president, CAMPCO.
Now the company has made an appeal to all arecanut growers to remain alert and exercise utmost caution while marketing their produce. Growers are advised to sell their produce only through reliable and reputed agencies and to refrain from dealing with parties who may indulge in mixing imported sub-standard arecanut with domestic produce for commercial gain, he added.
The cooperation of farmers, traders and all stakeholders is essential to preserve the integrity and reputation of Indian arecanut. Protecting the domestic arecanut sector is a collective responsibility, and every stakeholder has an important role to play in ensuring that only genuine, quality produce reaches the market, said the communication note.
CAMPCO reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the interests of arecanut growers and will continue to work with the concerned authorities to protect the domestic arecanut industry from unfair trade practices and to ensure a fair and remunerative market for Indian farmers, said Satishchandra.
